Japan’s nuke experts ready to help defang North Korea
Japan has told the United States it is ready to dispatch experts to North Korea to help the country dismantle nuclear facilities toward the “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula, government sources repeated.
If Washington and Pyongyang agree to demolish North Korea’s graphite-moderated reactor at Nyongbyon in the northwest, Tokyo would offer knowledge gained from decommissioning a similar reactor in eastern Japan, the sources said Friday.

defang / diːfǽŋ / を取り上げます。fangといえば「牙」のことですが、これに接頭辞のde-がついているのが今回のdefangです。接頭辞のde-には「除去」という意味があるので、fangの意味と合わせてみると「牙を抜く」という意味になります。日本語で「牙をむく」というように、牙はしばしば敵意や脅威を表すために使われることがあるので、文脈も考慮してdefangは「(脅威など)を排除する」という意味になるのではないかと考えました。手元の辞書に載っていなかったので、インターネットで検索してみました。「英辞郎 on the WEB」によると、「〜を無力化する」という意味になるようです。また、Merriam-Websterでは“to make harmless or less powerful”と定義されていました。「英辞郎 on the WEB」には第１義に「〔ヘビなどの〕牙（fang）を抜く」とあり、語の成り立ちも予想した通りのようです。
