今回は海外のファッション記事から英語を紹介します。それはgo-toです。ハイフンがつくことでどんな意味になるのでしょうか。
まずOxford English Dictionaryでは “Denoting a person or thing that may be on or is regularly sought out in a particular situation.” と定義されていました。ここから「頼れる」と言った意味になると推測しました。
確認のため手持ちの紙辞書で探したのですが、それらしき表現はありませんでした。なので『英辞郎 on the WEB』で調べたところ「＜主に米話＞[人が]頼りになる：(チーム・組織などの)主力の, 大黒柱の」とありました。
つまりこの記事ではgo-toの後にstylistを伴い、「メラニア氏が頼りにしているスタイリスト」つまり、「専属スタイリスト」という意味になると思います。
