encompass 復習

中国にある世界一長い橋が紹介されていました。

今回調べたのはencompass / ɪnkˈʌmpəs / です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第四版,大修館書店）には、「（攻撃なとで）…を（すっかり）取り巻く」や「<（さまざまの）考え・話題・事柄>を（…に）含む,含有する」とありました。また、LDOCEにはto include a wide range of ideas, subjects, etcやto completely cover or surround somethingとありました。

includeとの違いがわからなかったので、インターネットで調べてみました。すると、encompassはincludeよりも広くものごとをまとめる時に使われることがわかりました。

また、過去のブログでも触れられている通りenとcompassに分けて考えると、意味がわかりやすいかと思います。compassは「（囲まれた）地域;範囲,限界」などという意味があると辞書に記載されていました。(rain)
