　取り上げるワードは、“depict” / dɪpíkt /です。『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館)にを確認すると、〈人・作品が〉(絵・彫刻・言葉などで) …を描写する、描く、表現する、とあります。また、『New Oxford American Dictionary 』(第三版、Oxford University Press ) によると、“depict” の語源は、“late Middle English : from Latin depict –‘portrayed,’ from the verb depingere , from de-‘completely’ + pingere ‘to paint.’とありました。
　気になったのは、「描写する」という意味を持つ “describe” との区別です。英英辞典で確認します。『New Oxford American Dictionary 』(第三版、Oxford University Press ) をみると、“describe”は“give an account in words of (someone or something), including all the relevant characteristics, qualities, or events.”とあり、“depict”は“show or represent by a drowning, painting, or other art form.”と記載されていました。
ここからわかるように、“describe”は基本的に文字を使った描写で使われ、“depict”は特に絵や写真などでの描写で用いられるということになります。
