“be sworn in”を取りあげます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「宣誓して職務につかせる」という意味がありました。swear には誓うという意味があり、さらにはin でその中へと入るというイメージがつきます。take up や assumeなども「就任する」という意味がありますが、Camblidge Dictionaryによると“When someone is sworn in, they make a formal promise to be honest or loyal, either in a law court or when starting a new official job”と定義があるように、大統領の就任においても決まって宣誓があり、swear in にはその意味合いが含まれることがわかりました。(lua)
