Concerns for disaster victims widened ‘duties’ of emperor
Residents of Shimabara, Nagasaki Prefecture, were still reeling from the eruption of Mount Unzen-Fugendake when they received unexpected visitors in July 1991.
Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko traveled to Kyushu to meet the disaster victims, whose lives had been shattered by the volcano the previous month. The imperial couple often bent at the waist to hear what was being said, and they eventually lowered themselves onto the wooden floors of the evacuation centers to speak with the victims face to face.

今回取り上げる表現は、“reel from”です。“reel”と聞くと「糸巻き」という意味のものが思いつきますが、今回の“reel”は綴りが同じでも違う単語です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』(第３版、三省堂)を引いてみると、「〈人・心などが〉«…で»混乱[動揺、当惑]する«from, at, with»」という意味の動詞が載っていました。また、LDOCEでは“to be confused or shocked by a situation”と定義されています。
“reel”は心的なよろめきだけではなく、動作のよろめきも表現することができ、「〈人が〉よろめく」という意味になります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。また、酔った際にふらふらする、千鳥足で歩く、という表現をする際にも今回の表現を使うことができるようです。
