今回取り上げるのはsmear /smɪər/ です。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると、「1汚点、しみ（of） 2（新聞で）中傷、悪口（on）」という意味が見つかりました。今回は1つ目の意味で用いられています。
Merriam-Websterには “a spot made by or as if by an unctuous or adhesive substance” と定義されており、シミの原因となる汚れは油質のものやベタベタした粘着質のものでできていることがわかります。
今回は “This method does not require detergent and does not leave any smears” で「この方法では洗剤を使用せず、油汚れも残らない」となるかと思われます。
