Ad giant Dentsu may face criminal case as offices raided in probe of excessive overtime
Dentsu Inc. offices were raided Monday by labor ministry officials looking for evidence that the advertising firm’s employees exceeded legal limits on overtime hours.
The latest raid comes after the suicide of a young worker drew national attention to the employment practices of one of the country’s largest and most prestigious companies.

The young woman was a member of a section at the firm in charge of online advertising. Her workload grew sharply in October 2015 after she completed her probationary period. That month, her work time skyrocketed to some 105 hours a month in overtime, compared with 40 hours while on probation, her family said.
In one instance, her timecard records show a stretch of more than two straight days of work.
“a stretch of”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「ひと続きの」という意味がありました。LDOCEでも“a continuous period of time”と定義されているように期間の継続を表すときに使われることがわかりました。時間的なものだけでなく、“an area of land or water, especially one that is long and narrow”とありましたが、陸地や海の広さを表す単語でもあるようです。“at a stretch”で「ひと息で」というイディオムもあり、日本語ではストレッチというカタカナでの認識が強かったのですが、様々な意味があることがわかりました。(lua)
