今回取り上げるのは、“on a par with”という表現です。“par”という単語を聞くと、ゴルフ用語の「パー、基準打数」を思い浮かべますが、ここではどのような意味で用いられているのでしょうか。
そこで“on a par with”をLDOCEで調べてみると、“to be at the same level or standard”と定義されていました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典』(大修館書店)には、「〜と同格〔同等・同様〕である」などと載っていました。ゴルフでの「基準打数」という意味からも分かるように、“par”が「標準、基準」を表すため、今回の表現で上記の意味になります。(ninetails)
