Narita international airport was hit by a passenger check-in system glitch Tuesday, resulting in flight cancelations and delays, its operator said.

According to the Narita International Airport Corp., multiple airlines operating out of Terminal 2 at the major hub east of Tokyo were unable to use automated systems to process passengers and their baggage.

Operations were partially restored at the Japan Airlines' counter four and a half hours after the system trouble began around noon. The hiccup forced the airline to cancel one flight and delay two others.

hiccup /híkəp/ を取り上げます。「しゃっくり」でお馴染みの単語ですが、ここでは別の意味で用いられていることがわかります。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べると「（略式）一時的な中断（遅れ）、ちょっとした故障、障害（in）」という意味があることがわかりました。LDOCEには “a small problem or delay” と定義されています。

　語源はgoo辞書によると、「hocket，hickock(HIC+-OCK)の転化」とのことでした。1つ目のhocketについては「中期フランス語 hocquet しゃっくり，突然の中断」、2つ目のhickockのhicに関しては「酔った人のしゃっくり(hiccup)をまねた，またはしゃっくりの擬声語」とそれぞれ説明されています。「ひっく」という音に関連している言葉であるとわかり、綴りとも関連付けながら覚えておきたいと思いました。（aqua）
