Hokkaido gets second bite of the cherry with 2016 sakura sequel

KUSHIRO, Hokkaido--Most everyone looks forward to sakura season, but residents here aren’t so thrilled at the very early blooming of the Sargent's cherry blossoms in front of Kushiro City Museum.
The typhoons that ravaged Japan’s northernmost main island in August and early September are being blamed for bringing spring to southeast Hokkaido before autumn has even had the chance to get going.
“Cherry blossom viewing next year might not be as exciting as usual since the flower buds that were meant to pass the winter have already bloomed,” a curator at the museum said.
The flowers, which are widely associated with springtime in Japan, are blooming in other areas around the city as well, mostly near the ocean.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Kushiro Local Meteorological Observatory, cherry blossoms buds can bloom at the wrong time of the year by mistaking leaves being blown off by strong winds or dying of saline sea breezes as the first signs of spring.
The flowers seems to have taken the violent rain and wind that tore through Hokkaido starting mid-August as their cue to bloom. Several typhoons made landfall or neared the northern island over a monthlong period.

今回取り上げるのは“get second bite of the cherry”です。「二つ目のさくらんぼを食べる」とはどういうことでしょうか。

Macmillan dictionaryでは“another chance to do something”と定義され、『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版、大修館書店）では“anther of [a second] bite at [of] the cherry”の形で「二度目の機会」とありました。2つ対になったさくらんぼを想像すると、この意味が覚えやすいかと思いました。

見出しから、北海道は「今年で二度目の桜の見ごろを迎えている」といったところでしょうか。また、「さくら」のcherryとかけていることがわかります。(flyingbird)
