異例の進路をとっている台風10号ですが、関東では雨風のピークは出勤時間と重なるとの予報が出ています。
Powerful typhoon likely to hit Tohoku / Govt calls on public to secure safety
Powerful Typhoon No. 10, traveling in an unprecedented manner, is likely to make landfall in the Tohoku region on Tuesday afternoon.
If it goes ashore directly in Tohoku, the typhoon will be the first to land on the Pacific side of the region since statistics by the Japan Meteorological Agency began.
With affected areas likely to be hit by heavy rain, strong winds and high tides, the agency is calling on people to secure their safety as soon as possible.
Typhoon No. 10 formed near Tokyo’s Hachijojima island on Aug. 19 and traveled southwest, before taking a U-turn on Friday morning near Okinawa Prefecture’s Minami-Daitojima island to head northeast in the Pacific south of Honshu island.
The high atmospheric pressure in the west and east of Japan and the meandering westerlies were the main causes of the unusual path of the typhoon, according to the agency.

今回取り上げるのは “meandering westerlies” です。meanderとwesterlyをそれぞれLDOCEで調べてみますと、meanderは “if a river, stream, road etc meanders, it has a lot of bends rather than going in a straight line” と説明されておりました。主に川や道路が曲がりくねっている状態を表すようです。westerlyは “a westerly wind comes from the west” とあり、名詞では偏西風をさすようです。次に『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）でmeanderを調べてみますと、自動詞で「1（川が）曲がりくねって流れる、蛇行する 2（副詞句を伴って）当てもなくさまよう（along, through）（話が）とりとめなく続く（on）」という意味が載っておりました。westerlyも調べましたが名詞の意味は載っておりませんでした。
これらの意味から考えると、 “meandering westerlies” で「蛇行する偏西風」という意味になるかと思われます。（aqua）
