For the first time in 12 years, the “great meander of the Kuroshio current” has affected catch-es of shirasu whitebait. Shirasu catch-es along the Pacific Ocean have fallen into a slump, and hauls in Shizuoka and Aichi prefectures, which are famous for their catches of the fish, have declined significantly.

「黒潮大蛇行」を表す“the great meander of the Kuroshio current”を取りあげます。過去に何度も本ブログで記事にされているので復習となってしまいますが、“meander”と“current”をそれぞれ見ていきます。
まず、“meander”をMerriam-Websterを見てみると“a winding path or course”とあり、「蛇行」となることがわかりました。そこに「世界恐慌」“The Great Depression”を表す時に使われる“great”がつき、「大蛇行」となっています。次に“current”を調べると“the part of a fluid body (such as air or water) moving continuously in a certain direction”と定義され、ここでは「潮流」として使われています。
原因はわかっていませんが、この大蛇行は9月末に観測され、そこから約1か月は続くと予想されていました。(flying bird)
