Japan braces for a third powerful typhoon in a week

(CNN)Just a week after Typhoons Mindulle and Kompasu pummeled Japan, the country is bracing for another powerful typhoon to hit its eastern side.
Currently over the western Pacific south of Hachijojima Island, Typhoon Lionrock is moving northeast at 30 kilometers (18 miles) an hour.

It is expected to make landfall in Japan's northeast on Tuesday, bringing with it heavy rain. However, the typhoon will skirt Tokyo rather than hit the capital directly, as initially expected.

"Sustained winds of Lionrock now at 205 kilometers (127 miles) an hour, equivalent to a strong Category 3, nearly teetering on a weak Category 4 Atlantic hurricane," CNN's Derek Van Dam said. "A very defined eye within the storm system."

Japan's Meteorological Agency has issued an advisory warning of high waves and thunderstorms all up its eastern coast.

“teeter”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』によると「シーソーをする」「ぐらつく」とありました。シーソーと聞くと“seesaw”だと思っていましたが、“teeter-totter”という言い方もあるようです。

語源を調べてみると、古ノルド語のtitraに由来するそうで、意味は「震える」というそうです。“teeter on the brink of”で 「…の危機に瀕している」というイディオムもありました。

LDOCEでは“to be very close to being in an unpleasant or dangerous situation”と定義されています。
