前回の裏ゼミで学習した “juxtapose” の語源を調べていたところ, 同じ表現が取り入れられた以下の記事を見つけました。

本日取り上げる表現は “juxtapose” です。

『リーダーズ英和中辞典』(研究社)で調べると, 「(近接して)並べる, 並列[並置]する」とあり, 本記事でも同様の意味合いで用いられていることがわかりました。接頭辞 “juxta-” が「近い(next)」, また「そばに(aside)」の意をもっていることから, 上記の意味を示すそうです。

Oxford-Dictionaries.comには “place or deal with close together for contrasting effect” と定義され, “Black-and-white photos of slums were starkly juxtaposed with color images.” という例が挙げられていました。

昨年, 中期留学で受講したインターナショナルクラスの先生から, “juxtapose” は “place side by side”, “to compare”, または “contrast” に置き換えられると教わったことを思い出し, より明確にインプットされました。(Cayu)
