今回取り上げる表現は，“mother lode”です。これをそのまま直訳すると，「母の鉱山」となりますが，どのような意味があるのでしょうか。そこで，Merriam-Websterを確認してみると，“the place where the largest amount of gold, silver, etc., in a particular area can be found”とありました。さらに，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）には，「主鉱脈」や「主要な源泉」，「母体」と記載されていました。今回の場合，「英国は，リオ五輪でメダルラッシュが止まらない」となるのではないでしょうか。
