Risako Kawai earned a wrestling gold medal in her Olympic debut, winning the women’s 63-kilogram title on Thursday at the Rio Games.
Having witnessed Saori Yoshida’s defeat right before her match, the 21-year-old got a grip on herself. “I was shocked, and thinking unexpected things can happen at the Olympics,” Kawai said.
In the final, Kawai accumulated points by aggressively attempting to tackle her Belarussian opponent. Using her fingertips, she restrained the movement of her opponent.
After receiving the gold medal, Kawai smiled and said, “It’s heavy.”
Kawai won the silver medal last year at the world championships. She was initially in the 58-kilogram class but later changed to the 63-kilogram division, in part because Kaori Icho, who won her fourth consecutive Olympic title Wednesday, was in the 58-kilogram competition.
Although this was the first time for Kawai to compete at the Olympics, she wrestled vigorously and naturally to win the brightest medal.
