熊本県では現在も余震が起こっており、危険な状態が続いております。そして、日曜日には雨が降るという予報が出ており、地すべりなどの二次災害に対する警戒が高まっています。

Torrential rain forecast for quake-hit areas

Japan's Meteorological Agency warns that localized torrential rain could hit areas struck by a series of earthquakes in the Kyushu region through Sunday.

Agency officials are calling on people to exercise caution as the quake might have made the ground loose and increased the risk of landslides even with slight rain.

They say an approaching low pressure system that is accompanied by a front could bring unstable atmospheric conditions, mainly to western Japan, from Saturday night.

The officials say some areas may have more than 50 millimeters of rain per hour through Sunday.

今回取り上げるのはexercise cautionです。exerciseは名詞では「運動」、動詞では「運動させる／する」という意味が最初に浮かびますが、この文脈では「運動」は関係ありません。

他にどのような意味をもつのか『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版　研究社）で調べてみますと、他動詞の2つ目の意味に「（格式）（権利など）を行使する、（役目など）を果たす、（影響など）を及ぼす」とありました。3つ目の意味に「（器官、精神力など）を働かせる、用いる」とありました。この意味の例文には”Exercise caution in turning corners.” 「かどを曲がるときには注意しなさい」というものがありました。

直訳で考えると、caution（注意）を働かせるとなるので、注意するという訳になるようです。次にcautionを調べてみますと、名詞では「1 用心、注意、慎重さ」とあり、例文には”use [exercise] extreme [great] caution when crossing this street.” 「この通りを渡るときには十分に注意すること」と同じようなものがありました。exercise と caution が組み合わさると「注意する」という意味になるようです。「注意をする」という連結（collocation）は日本人学習者にはなじみがないと思います。

ここでの訳は「気象庁の職員は、地震が地盤を緩め、少しの雨でも地すべりのリスクが高まることに注意するよう人々に呼びかけている」となります。

また、cautionはイギリス英語では警察官などによる警告という意味があるようです。
