本日は記事の見出しにある、"out of the mouths of babes"を取り上げます。
文字通りには「赤ちゃんの口から」のような意味となりますが、この表現はどのような意味を持ち、なぜそのような意味になったのかを調べてみました。
『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』には定義が見つかりませんでしたが、オンラインで調べてみたところ、Cambridge Dictionaries On-line には "said when a child says something that surprises you because it seems very wise"とありました。The Free Dictionary には"Prov. Children occasionally say remarkable or insightful things."ありました。
どのような成り立ちでこの意味になったのかを調べてみると同辞書に"expressions in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible"と説明があり、聖書(旧約聖書、旧約聖書)に由来する表現であるとわかりました。対応箇所、詩篇 8篇2節 (Psalms 8:2)には
"Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength,..." (New King James Version)
「あなたは幼子と乳飲み子の口によって力を打ち建てられました。」(新改訳)
とあり、聖書に同様の表現が用いられていることが確認できました。The Free Dictionary に、例文が見つかりましたので、紹介します。
