The conversations that take place between HMQ and the prime minister – formal or otherwise – are the sanctum sanctorum of British government. Politicians who let slip what she has said (as David Cameron did when he remarked that the Queen had “purred down the line” over the Scots’ vote against independence in 2014) can expect to be put on the royal naughty step. She herself reveals nothing of these discussions. Had the PM been so minded, she could have confided her plan in fine-print detail to the Queen without fear of the corgis talking out of school.

今回取り上げる表現は，“sanctum sanctorum”です。発音記号は，/sǽŋktəm sæŋktɔ'rəm/になります。まず，“sanctum”を見てみると，『ジーニアス英和辞典』（大修館書店）には，「聖所」や「（落ち着ける）私室，奥まった部屋」と記載されていました。次に，“sanctum sanctorum”を見ると，「（ユダヤ神殿の）至聖所」とありました。これは，旧約聖書に出てくる幕屋およびエルサレム神殿の聖なる所を指しています。

また，『新英和大辞典』（研究社）を確認すると，「（人の妨げを受けない）私室，書斎」とあります。ここでは，「メイ首相とエリザベス女王の会話は，妨げを受けないほど英国政府にとって神聖なものである」と解釈できるのではないでしょうか。

語源を調べてみると，Online Etymology Dictoinaryによると，“from Latin sanctum “a holy place,” as in Late Latin sanctum sanctorum “holy of holies” (translating Greek to hagion ton hagiou, translating Hebrew qodesh haqqodashim),”とありました。ラテン語から来ていることが分かります。さらに，“In English, sanctum sanctorum attested from c. 1400; in sense of “a person's private retreat”from 1706.”と記載されておりました。(Nao)
