本日は、New York Times の記事より、"touch a nerve" を拾います。nerveが用いられた表現はブログでも数多く取り上げられ，get on one's nervesは英検２級レベルのイディオムですが，動詞 touchが用いられたこの表現も同じ意味なのでしょうか？
日本語においても「神経に触る」は、「その人の神経を必要以上に刺激して，いらいらさせる。 」(大辞林 第3版) の意になりますが、英語もほとんど近い意味となるようです。Collins English Dictionary On-lineには"to mention or bring to mind a sensitive issue or subject"、Oxford Dictionariesには"Provoke a reaction by referring to a sensitive topic."と定義されています。また『Wisdom英和辞典 第三版』には、「(人の)痛い所〔泣き所、弱点〕に触れる」と定義されていました。 記事の見出しには、おそらくCollins English Dictionaryの語義が当てはまるかと思います。
関連をして、"nerve"には、「神経」の意味ですが、「心配、緊張、いらだち」の意味になることや、「勇気、沈着」の意味になることもあります。例えば、前者の場合は［〜s］と複数で用いて、" be a bundle [bag] of nerves"と なると「(くだけて) 極度に緊張している」となります。

また、後者の場合、"have the nerve to do"となると、「...する勇気がある」となります。
