cobblestone 復習

クリスマスということもあり、この記事を取り上げます。メキシコにあるトゥラルプハワ・デ・ライヨンという街にクリスマスの飾りをすべて手作りで作っているというお店があるようです。

Despite the absence of a traditional Christmas setting, Tlalpujahua, a former mining town, does not lack for charm. The narrow cobblestone streets sweep up sharp slopes to an airy plaza, where a 300-year-old church with a pink bell tower dominates the tiled rooftops and the surrounding landscape.

Stores are tiny and tidy, stacked side by side, and the village’s entrance is graced with a giant Christmas tree that stays up all year.

“cobblestone”を取り上げます。『ジーニアス英和辞典（大修館書店）』では “cobble”で「丸石大の石炭」とありました。LDOCEでも確認してみたところ “a small round stone set in the ground, especially in the past, to make a hard surface for a road” と定義されており、石畳になっているような道をイメージしました。坂になって先に続いているような細い道がさらにその街の雰囲気を伝えていると感じました。（lua）
