Geminids meteor shower

先日，夜空に流れ星のような、隕石のような光が落下するのを見て驚いたばかりなのですが、１４日夜から１５日未明にかけてはふたご座流星群がピークを迎えるそうです。ふたご座流星群は多い時には１時間に４０個もの流星が観測されるそうで、しかも今年は１０年に１度の好条件であると言われています。

And lucky for everyone, the Geminid meteor shower will be visible in both the northern and southern hemispheres, NASA said. Many of the bright arcs can be seen for 1-2 seconds each.

取り上げるのは“Geminid meteor shower”です。

『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版（大修館書店）』には“Gemini”で「[単数扱い]ふたご座」という意味が書かれていました。“meteor shower”は”a lot of meteors that fall down towards the Earth at the same time”(LDOCE)という意味で、日本語では「流星雨」と呼ばれます。

”Geminids”だけで「ふたご座流星群」という意味にもなり、”Geminids meteor shower”と言うことも可能です。
流星群と流星雨の違いが気になったので調べてみると、Wikipediaには流星雨とは「特定の流星群が普段より活発化した現象」という記述があり、流星雨よりさらに多い場合は「流星嵐」と呼ぶこともあるそうです。
この表現の由来ですが、記事には” The Geminid meteor shower, an annual event, got its name because the meteors look like they're coming from the constellation of Gemini”.と書かれています。
また、○○流星群というときには”Orionids”「オリオン座流星群」、”Leonids”「しし座流星群」、“Draconids”「りゅう座流星群」のように接尾辞が決まっていることが見て取れます。(bookmark)
