spellbound 復習

There are some things around the world that provide photo-showing rights for decades.
We haven't got them all -- in fact we barely scratched the surface.
But we have picked out a few of the scenes that, if you're lucky enough to witness them, will invariably leave you spellbound.

取り上げるのは”spellbound”です。これは”spellbind”「…魔法にかける、魅了する」の過去・過去分詞形でもありますが、ここでは形容詞の「魔法にかかった、魅了された、うっとりした」という意味で使われています。『Oxford Learner’s Dictionaries』には” with your attention completely held by what you are listening to or watching”と定義されています。
“bind”には「拘束される」という意味もあるので、まるで魔法によって縛られているかのごとく魅了されている様子が想像できます。
『Online Etymology Dictionary』で語源を確認してみると、1742年に”spell”と”bound”が合体し"to be bound by or as if by a spell”という意味を持つようになったことが分かりました。また、動詞の”spellbind”の起源は1808と書かれており、動詞の方が後に生まれた言葉のようです。(bookmark)
