秋篠宮ご夫妻が日本とブラジルの外交関係樹立１２０周年を祝う記念行事などに出席するためブラジルを訪問し、首都ブラジリアでルセフ大統領を表敬訪問されました。
Prince Akishino and his wife, Princess Kiko, paid a courtesy call on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in Brasilia on Friday morning.
The couple, now on an official visit to the South American country, talked with Rousseff for about 40 minutes, expressing their gratitude for the Brazilian society that accepted a lot of Japanese immigrants, according to sources with access to the meeting.
They are also believed to have talked on further strengthening the friendship between the two countries.
After the meeting, the couple attended a luncheon hosted by the Brazilian government to mark the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Japan-Brazil diplomatic relations.

今回は"courtesy call"を取り上げます。"courtesy"を『ジーニアス英和辞典(大修館書店)』でひいてみると、名詞では「礼儀正しいこと、礼儀的な行為(あいさつ)」とありました。今回は形容詞なので、「礼儀上の」という意味になります。そこにcallがつながるので礼儀的な訪問だということがわかりました。よく見てみると辞書にも"courtesy call(visit)"とあり、「表敬訪問」とありました。ルセフ大統領への訪問は40分という短い時間で行われたということでわずかな訪問という意味のあるcallが使われているということもわかりました。(lua)
