今回取り上げるのは、“courtesy call”という表現です。Websterで調べてみると、“a social call made for reasons of general courtesy and without a more specific purpose”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』でそれぞれの単語を確認してみると、“courtesy”は「慇懃な行為、儀式的な挨拶」とあり、“call”には「公式訪問、短い訪問」といった意味がありました。そのため、この2語を合わせた“courtesy call”で「表敬訪問」を表しています。(ninetails)
