take the heat

「スマーフ２　アイドル救出大作戦！」からです。Patrickは、幼いころに父であるビクターに、飼っていたオウムを取り上げられたことを、大人になった今でも恨んでいます。

Patrick: Hey, I never asked for you to come barging into my life, okay? I didn’t ask you to marry my mother or take away Zeus.
Victor: Zeus? The pigeon?
Patrick: The parrot. My parrot. Taken away because you were allergic.
Victor: I was not allergic to that bird, Patrick.
Patrick: Yes, you were.
Victor: No, I wasn’t. You were.
Patrick: What?
Victor: It got so bad, every day. You were wheezing, coughing. Your mother and I both knew that it would break your heart… to think the bird had to go away because of you. You already blamed yourself for your dad. So I took the heat.

今回気になったのは“take the heat”です。“Take the heat”の後に付ける単語により、少しずつ意味が異なるようです。“take [get] the heat for”で「＜事＞の責任を取る」、“take the heat off”で「…への圧力［追求］の手をゆるめる、…を楽にしてやる」、“take the heat out of”で「＜危機など＞の興奮［心配］をなくす」（『ジーニアス英和辞典第四版』大修館書店）と辞書に載っていました。
小さいころに飼っていたオウムを取り上げられたことを未だに恨んでいたPatrickでしたが、実はPatrick自身が鳥アレルギーだったということをVictorに打ち明けられました。Victorと妻がそれを打ち明けるよりも、Victorが鳥アレルギーだと嘘をついて、当時幼かったPatrickを悲しませないようにしようとしたのでした。（Green）
