三井不動産グループが専修大学生田キャンパス近くの横浜市都筑区で販売していた大型マンションで、建設の基礎工事を一部で実施せず、虚偽データで工事を進めていたことが明らかになりました。これが原因となり、建物を支えとなるべき複数の杭が地盤に届いておらず、建物が傾くという事態が生じています。

Yokohama condo building develops tilt due to shoddy construction

Part of a multistory condominium complex for 700 households here is shifting on its foundations because of shoddy construction work that was found to have been falsified, sources said.

They said an investigation had shown that some of the piles supporting one of the four buildings were not sunk into the bedrock, resulting in a difference in height of up to 2.4 centimeters.

The Yokohama city government has mounted an official investigation based on suspected violations of the Building Standards Law.

今回取り上げるのは、“bedrock”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“solid rock in the ground below soil or sand”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』で確認してみると、「〔地〕基岩、（最下層の）岩盤、岩床、基盤」といった意味が載っていました。この表現の中にある“bed”は「土台、基礎、層」を表しているため、“bedrock”で以上のような意味を表しています。
