２５日、JR東海の新幹線浜松工場で親子連れらが参加する見学イベントが開かれ、東海道・山陽新幹線を走る検査車両ドクターイエローの車体をクレーンで吊り上げる作業が初めて一般の鉄道ファンに公開されました。

HAMAMATSU, Shizuoka -- It's called "Doctor Yellow," and on July 25 it was flying high for visitors to Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Central)'s maintenance yards here.
"Doctor Yellow" is the moniker given the two bright yellow maintenance trains that run one each on JR Central's and West Japan Railway Co. (JR West)'s Shinkansen bullet train lines. They only hit the rails about every 10 days and their operation timetable is not released like other commercial trains, and so spotting one in the wild, so to speak, is considered by some to be a harbinger of good luck and happiness.

今回拾い上げる表現は、“hit the rail”です。これは、どのような意味だろうと辞書とインターネットを使って調べてみましたが、載っていませんでした。きっと何かあるはずだと思い、調べていく中で、“hit the road”という表現を見つけました。関係があると考え、辞書で確認してみると、『ジーニアス英和辞典第４版』（大修館書店）に、「出発する、旅に出る」と記載されていました。これを見て、“hit the rail”は、“hit the road”をもじったものだと思いました。新幹線は、“road”ではなく、“rail”の上を走るためこのような表現になったと考えられます。(Nao)
