日米首脳会談のための安倍首相の訪米によって中韓系アメリカ人を中心に反日デモが行われました。今年は戦後70年を迎えますが、現代の人々の心にも並ならぬ爪痕が残っていることがひしひしと伝わってきます。

Hundreds protested, calling on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to apologize for his country's atrocities toward other parts of Asia during the war. The protest came as Abe met with President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.
記事の中の“atrocity”が気になりました。『ジーニアス英和辞典第4版(大修館書店)』によりますと「残虐、非道、極悪」とありました。LODCEでは “an extremely cruel and violent action, especially during a war”と書いてあります。ラテン語のatrox ,atrocisが語源で「冷酷な」を意味します。
