the cherry on top
背番号「５１」を背負ったイチローが帰ってきました。
イチロー選手への期待度は球団首脳陣がフロリダからわざわざ来日して開かれた入団会見が物語っています。
今回は記事の後半部から“the cherry on top”という表現をとりあげます。直訳では「てっぺんのさくらんぼ」ですが、『Wisdom英和辞典第３版』をみてみると「the cherry on the top[cake]：予想外のおまけ」と紹介されていました。
過去の記事の引用になりますが、『Macmillan Dictionary』の説明でこの表現のイメージがつかめました。“the cherry on the top[cake]”は「the final thing that makes something perfect：何かを完璧にする最後のもの」と定義されています。
その“なにか”がイチロー選手であったようです。
大リーグ通算３０００安打も目前と迫っていますが、マーリンズの外野は最強の布陣がしかれています。そのためイチロー選手は守備固めや代打、代走による「第４の外野手」としての起用が見込まれていますが、必ずそれ以上の活躍を魅せてくれると私は思っています。（野球小僧）
