take note of

(Shou-VR*)

Scientists discover how killifish choose mate

Japanese researchers have singled out a nerve cell that is responsible for making female killifish choose their mating partner.

The researchers put male and female killifish in a tank with a divider. They gave the females several hours to take note of individual males.

The females accepted courtship behavior from the males in about 10 seconds. It usually takes 60 seconds for females to accept the courtship of males they haven't seen before.

The researchers say they found that a specific neuron in the fish's brain determines mating preference in female as they acknowledge males.

They note they succeeded in making female killifish accept the courtship of males more readily by artificially controlling the neuron.

Assistant Professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science Hideaki Takeuchi says the search for similar nervous system mechanisms in humans may help define how and why people fall in love.

The findings will be published in the US journal Science on Friday.
