Police confirm eight people murdered in 'tragic day for Edmonton'

Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht has confirmed eight people were murdered, including two children, in what he called “a tragic day for Edmonton.”

The worst killing rampage in the city’s history began Monday night and ended Tuesday morning with a suspect found dead in a Vietnamese restaurant in Fort Saskatchewan. The unidentified male was targeted by police after killing four females, two males and two children – one male, one female.

Chief Knecht said police were called to northwest Edmonton after a suspicious circumstances saying there were concerns about a depressed male in the house. Police arrived at 8:30 pm Monday. The male in question was not there and police officers determined nothing was suspicious
When the police returned hours later, seven family members were dead.

The murder suspect then crashed his vehicle by the VN Express restaurant early Tuesday morning before killing himself.

“These events were not gang related,” said Chief Knecht, “but instances of domestic violence.”

The situation has been described as “fluid” by investigators still looking for information. What is known so far is that a 30-year-old woman was found dead in a Haddow area house when police arrived at 6:52 pm Monday. Children were home when police responded but are safe.

Police officers later discovered seven people killed inside the northwest Edmonton two-storey home.

The police and RCMP then converged on the VN Express in Fort Saskatchewan. The downtown street was closed off by 6:30 am Tuesday.

The front doors of the restaurant were missing and pieces of a metal frame were hanging from above. A black Mercedes SUV on the street had its hood rammed up against an RCMP truck. The man believed to be the murder suspect was found dead inside the restaurant.

The police have yet to release the names of the victims or the killer.
