今回は、dug a hole for ourselvesという箇所に注目したいと思います。過去にもdigという単語は何度もブログに取り上げられている様に様々な意味がありますが、今回はdig oneself (into) a hole = dig a hole for oneselfという形で、「自業自得である」(『ウィズダム英和辞典　第二版』三省堂)という意味で用いられています。日本語でも墓穴を掘るという言葉がありますが、英語でも似たような表現があるのですね。(Astroriver)
