Struggling television network Ten has swung to a $243 million loss on falling revenue and large write-downs.

今回取り上げたいのは、write-downという表現です。動詞のwrite downは言わずもがな、「書き留める」という意味がすぐに思い浮かびますが、名詞のwrite-downは、「（帳簿価値・資産額の）圧縮、削減、減価償却(writing down)」という意味になるようです。（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第四版』大修館）
また、downといえばupはないのか同辞書で探してみますと、write-upは「≪略式≫記事、（特に）好意的な記事」とありました。

write-downとwrite-upでは、似ているようで全く意味が違うのですね。（Nat）
