Another week of lies and still Trump, the huckster, keeps his tawdry show going

Earlier this year, a Saturday Night Live skit featured a gameshow called What Even Matters Anymore?, “the show where I tell you something our president did or said, and you have to tell me: does it even matter any more?”. In the final round, contestants have to write down what they think “would actually lead to any kind of consequences” for Donald Trump. One idea is “sex tape with Don, Jr”. (Skip the rest)

 今回取り上げる語は、huckster /ˈhʌkstə/ です。見出しでトランプ大統領を揶揄する形で用いられていますが、どういった意味でしょうか。文脈からあまり好ましくない意味であることがわかります。以下で確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“a person who writes advertisements, especially for radio and television, or who sells things or brings ideas or people to the public's attention in a noisy, annoying way” とあり、LDOCE には “someone who tries to sell things in a way that is too forceful and not honest – used to show disapproval” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Middle English (in the sense ‘retailer at a stall, hawker’): probably of Low German origin.” とあります。
以上のことから、huckster は「宣伝マン」という意味を持ち、特に批判して用いていることがわかりました。(OkaUchi)
