UNSC condemns N.Korean nuke test

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea's third nuclear test.

The Security Council held an emergency closed-door session at UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

South Korean foreign minister Kim Sung-hwan chaired the meeting. His country holds the rotating Security Council presidency this month.

The council approved a non-binding press statement with support of all 15 members.

Kim read the statement that strongly condemns the North Korean test.

It states the test is a grave violation of the Security Council resolutions.

Kim said the test threatens the peace and stability of the international community. He said the council will consider appropriate measures.

US ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said North Korea's nuclear and missile programs will not be tolerated. She said the provocation will be met with North Korea's increasing isolation and pressure under UN sanctions.

Diplomatic sources say the US and South Korea have agreed to take tougher measures against North Korea.

Japan's ambassador to the UN Tsuneo Nishida welcomed the adoption of the statement calling it a resolute one.

He told reporters that Japan will seek a new Security Council resolution to impose severe sanctions on North Korea.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said it is deplorable that North Korea defied the call from the international community to refrain from any further provocative measures. Ban said he hopes the Security Council will take appropriate action.

(UG)
