A new body scanner has been introduced at Perth International Airport.
It identifies items that cannot be detected by existing screening technology, such as drugs which are being carried internally.
The scanner uses radio frequency energy which is deemed to be safe.
The technology is already used overseas and can detect both metallic and non-metallic items.
Travellers will be randomly selected to go through and anyone who refuses will not be allowed to board their flight.
このnewsで気になった表現は、deem「考える、思う、見なす」(英辞朗 on the Web)です。deemの語源は、初12c以前の古英語のdeman(判断する)とありました。(『ジーニアス英和大辞典』)
また、同じような意味のconsiderとの違いは何か調べてみましたが、はっきりした違いは見つかりませんでした。しかし、たくさんの例文を見ているとdeemの方がconsiderよりも堅い表現で、あまり日常では使われない印象を持ちました。deemは契約書などに、よく使われるようです。
deem highly of 〜 で、「〜を尊敬する」という意味になるようなので、あわせて抑えたいです。(Nat)
