trade barbs overは、「激しく応酬する」という意味です。barbsのもともとの意味は「(矢じり・釣り針などの）あご」ですが、そこから「有刺鉄線（barbed wire）のとげ」という意味でも使われるようになり、さらに「とげのある言葉」という比喩的意味も生まれました。（UG@群馬太田）
Anti-Japan protests sweep across China for 2nd straight day

Anti-Japan demonstrations were held in major cities in China on Sunday for the second straight day, as China and Japan traded barbs over territorial disputes in the East China Sea following landings on the Japanese-controlled islands by Chinese and Japanese activists.
Protests in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen and in Hangzhou, in eastern China, turned violent with protesters burning Japanese flags and vandalizing Japanese restaurants and Japanese vehicles.
Ten Japanese activists, including local politicians, landed on one of the Senkaku islands, known as Diaoyu in China, on Sunday, four days after seven Chinese activists landed on the same island.
