今回採り上げるのは冒頭のIs Volvo sailing into choppy waters?という一文。choppyは「〈海湖が〉波立っている」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味ですので，sail into choppy watersは文字通りに訳すと「波立つ海を渡る」となります。ただし，これは比喩表現。choppyにはその他に「〈市場などが〉変動の激しい」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）という意味があることから，ここではchoppy watersは「移り変わりの早い市場」を比喩的に表現していることがわかります。果たしてVolvoのV40はchoppy watersを進むimpelling forceとなるのでしょうか。（Koyamamoto）
