Saltine

SUVの人気が加熱する中，その潮流に抗い，スェーデンの自動車メーカーVolvoがステーションワゴンV60 T5 Drive-Eを2015年に発売します。
今回採り上げるas square and imperishable as a Saltineという表現。Saltineは日本でもお馴染みの「塩ふりクラッカー」のこと（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）。また同辞書によればsoda crackerとも呼ばれるようです。よってas square and imperishable as a Saltineは「まるで塩ふりクラッカーのように四角くて飽きがこない」と解釈できます。
ちなみにsquareには古い言い回しで「古くさい, 時代遅れの, やぼったい」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）といった意味があるようですが，見出しや今回採り上げた部分のsquareはそれも掛けてあるというのは深読みし過ぎでしょうか。（Koyamamoto）
