ロンドンオリンピック フェンシング男子フルーレ団体戦が8月5日行われ、日本は決勝まで進み団体初の銀メダルを獲得しました。その「獲得する」という部分では出るかなと思っていた動詞 foilが使われていて、こちらも一安心。実はこのfoil、以前どこかで取り上げたものです（太田選手の前回のオリンピックのときかな？）。

フルーレはFleuret（flower）を語源として、「突き」だけの戦い方となります。ちなみにその他の種目はEpee（エペ）、Sabre（サーブレ）です。

foilの動詞の意味には「突いて勝つ、相手を打ち砕く」があります。フェンシング関係の記事ではwinに代わってこれがしばしば登場します。ここは「銀メダルを突く」といった意味合いでしょう。またfoilにある「箔をぬる」（cf. アルミフォイル）という意味もかけてあるような気もします。（UG）

Olympics: Japan gets men's team foil silver in fencing

LONDON (Kyodo) -- Japan won the men's team foil silver at the London Games for the country's first Olympic medal in fencing's team event with a series of upsets before eventually succumbing to world No. 1 Italy in the final on Sunday.

Ryo Miyake, Yuki Ota, Kenta Chida and Suguru Awaji put up a brave fight against the Italians in a 45-39 defeat following victories over reigning world champions China in the last eight and world bronze medal winner Germany in the semifinals.
