Olympics: Brilliant Hanyu takes short program lead in Sochi

SOCHI, Russia (Kyodo) -- Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu became the first skater in history to break the 100-point short program mark with an epic skate on Thursday, grabbing the lead in the men's singles at the Sochi Olympics.

On a day when his idol, Russian superstar Evgeni Plushenko, withdrew from the competition through injury and announced his retirement shortly afterwards, Hanyu racked up 101.45 points to put himself firmly in position for the gold medal ahead of Friday's free skate.

Hanyu was nearly four points ahead of Canada's three-time world champion Patrick Chan, who scored 97.52. Javier Fernandez of Spain was third with 86.98. Japan's Daisuke Takahashi followed in fourth and Tatsuki Machida was 11th.

Performing to Parisian Walkways by Gary Moore, the 19-year-old Hanyu looked supremely confident after winning the men's short program in the team competition last week.

He opened with a clean quad toeloop that set the tone for a dynamic skate in which he also executed a triple axel and another triple combination, comfortably surpassing the previous world mark he set en route to winning the Grand Prix Final in Fukuoka in December.

His performance had coach Brian Orser leaping up and down in delight at rinkside and Hanyu admitted that he was pleased with the account he gave of himself.
"I'm really happy," he said. "This is the Olympics so my legs were wobbling a little (with nerves), but I did what I had to do and I would like to think as a Japanese I can be proud of this performance," he said.
