SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING / Japan’s team ends medal drought
Japan’s synchronized swimming team won the bronze medal at the Rio Games on Friday, ending a medal drought in the team event since the nation won silver in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
The national team came third in the technical routine on Thursday, and again in the free routine on Friday with 95.4333 points. Their overall score was 189.2056.
Their free program began with the sound of the yosedaiko traditional drum and depicted a scene from the Japanese myth in which the sun deity Amaterasu Omikami emerges from a cave. It was based on their hope that the Japanese flag, representing the sun, would rise above the medal podium. The last part of their performance attracted attention, with a whistling sound reminiscent of Brazilian samba.
After the team won medals at last summer’s world championships, coach Masayo Imura told the members at a meeting for Rio, “You shouldn’t cry from now on.”
It has since been an unspoken rule for them to hold back their tears, even if it is hard for them to control their emotions.
On the day that the Japanese duet won bronze, their compatriots in the team competition only touched the medals but did not put them around their necks as motivation for them to “grab their own.”

今回取り上げるのはcompatriotsです。patriotには愛国者という意味がありますが、これに「共に」という意味を表す接頭辞のcomがつくとどのような意味になるのでしょうか。『ライトハウス英和辞典』（第5版 研究社）で調べてみますと、可算名詞で「（所有格の後で）同国人、同胞」という意味が見つかりました。「所有格の後で」とあるように、記事内では “their compatriots” となっています。LDOCEでは “someone who was born in or is a citizen of the same country as someone else” と説明されておりました。citizenやsame countryという言葉から、国という単位がポイントとなっているように感じました。
この種目ではアテネオリンピック以来のメダル獲得となり、長い間待ち望んでいた瞬間となりました。
