English-Japanese dictionary of crime, law enforcement lingo compiled

MATSUE, Japan (Kyodo) -- An English-Japanese dictionary with about 3,000 entries on crime and law enforcement terms, including slang expressions, has been compiled by university professors in Shimane Prefecture.

Masayoshi Yamada, professor emeritus at Shimane University, has long used police fiction as a tool to teach real-life English. He has kept the idea of compiling a specialized dictionary in the field for many years after frequently encountering technical terms by police insiders and those related to drugs.

Yamada worked with one of his former students, Yoshifumi Tanaka, professor at the University of Shimane, to collect expressions from sources including novels, nonfiction materials and news articles. They used all means necessary for accuracy, such as by contacting authors and making direct inquiries to police authorities in the United States.

Of the more unusual entries, one example would be "furikome sagi," a type of fraud in which seniors are tricked to deposit money, translated as a "grandma scam." Another would be "cement kimono," which means disposing of bodies in concrete-filled containers. It comes with an index allowing users to find words both in Japanese and English.

"It is an unconventional dictionary, but we want a broad range of people to use it because it shows English words as they are actually being used," Yamada said.

The book, "Hanzai Sosa no Eigo Jiten" or "A Dictionary of Crime and Law enforcement Lingo," was published by Sanseido Publishing Co. at 2,310 yen per copy.
