イギリスで今一番話題となっているのは，やはりRoyal Weddingのことでしょう。式当日のイギリス各紙は一面で，最も喜ばしい1日として記事にしているところが多いようです。そして今回取り上げるのは，式の前日の様子についての記事です。

galaとは「お祭り，祝祭，にぎやかな催し物」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第3版，大修館書店）。今回の場合，gala dinnerで「祝賀会」という意味になります（英辞郎on the WEB）。さらにMerriam-Webster Onlineにはa festive celebration; especially : a public entertainment marking a special occasionとありました。galaは国をあげてお祝い事をする時に使用されるようです。また以前ブログにもありましたが，galaには他に「運動競技会, （特に）水泳競技会晴れ着」という意味もあるので，復習しておきましょう。

結婚式は全世界で約20億人が視聴するのではないかと考えられています。日本でも先ほどまで結婚式の模様が放送されていましたが，テレビで見ていても，ロンドン中が歓喜の渦に包まれていたことがよくわかりました。（ゼミ生 b.m.）
