昨日1月10日は成人の日でした。各地では成人式が行われましたが，山口県の下関では偽物の刀を持った新成人が逮捕されたようです。この様子を伝えている記事JT Online(01/11/11付け)から気になった表現を紹介します。

At Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, a 19-year-old boy was arrested for brandishing a 70-cm fake sword at a local ceremony. He took part in the event because he was in the same academic year as those who had turned 20, which in his region allows him to attend.

今回注目する表現はbrandishです。辞書『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第3版，大修館書店）には「（物）を見せびらかす，（武器など）を（おどかすために）振り回す」とあり，LDOCEには“to wave something around in a dangerous or threatening way, especially a weapon”とありました。「（武器を）振り回す」と聞くと他にもwieldという単語もふと思いつきます。
私も昨年成人式を迎えたのですが，多くの友人に会うことができ大変うれしかったことを今でも覚えています。新成人のみなさんおめでとうございます。（ゼミ生 yorimoney）
