昨日のDY(12/28/10付け)の一面にあったSunrise Party rejects Kan’s coalition offerという記事から英語の表現を拾います。民主党は連立政権を作り上げるために奔走していますが，なかなか思い通りにはいっていない模様です。
Yosano, who was finance minister in the Liberal Democratic Party administration before the DPJ’s ascent to power in 2009, was seen to be positive about playing a role in Kan’s government.
But other Sunrise Party members were reluctant to accept the offer, saying cooperating with Kan would make no sense given that the party was created to prevent the DPJ from staying in power for a long time.
“We’ve decided not to discuss the matter for a while out of concern that we might create excessive expectations” within the DPJ, Yosano told reporters.
Okada had sounded out Hiranuma on becoming the minister in charge of dealing with North Korea over its past abductions of Japanese, according to some Sunrise Party lawmakers.
今回取り上げる表現はsound outです。辞書で意味を確認してみると「（人）の意見を打診する」という記述がありました（『スーパーアンカー英和辞典』第4版，学研教育出版）。同辞書の用例には「I’ll sound her out on the issue. その問題は彼女の意見を打診してみましょう。」とあり，sound （人） out on〜で「（人）に〜に関して打診する」という意味になることがわかります。上の記事と辞書の用例共にsound outの後は前置詞onが続きます。以前もブログで取り上げたと思いますが，このonにはaboutよりも専門的な内容を指す「…に関して（concerning）, …について（about）」という意味があります（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第4版，大修館書店）。
ちなみに，sound offだと「ずけずけものを言う；（不満などを）まくしたてる（on, about, against）」という全く別の意味になってしまうので注意が必要です。（ゼミ生 camel）
