ある記事を読んでいた時にメモをした単語を紹介します。souped-upです。初めはそのままsoupとupから連想して「あたためる」のような意味になるのではないかと予測しました。以下辞書の定義です。
Oxford Dictionary of English（2th）: (soup something up) (often as adj. souped-up) “increase the power and efficiency of an engine or other machine” “make something more elaborate or impressive”
Merriam-Webster: “enhanced or increased in appeal, power, performance, or intensity
also : elaborate, embellished”
Collins Free Online Dictionary: “(of a vehicle or vehicle engine) modified so as to be more powerful” “made more exciting or interesting”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「〈車・エンジンなどが〉パワーアップした」
また同書にはsoup upという句動詞の形で「〈エンジンなど〉の馬力をあげる：〈コンピュータなど〉の処理能力を高める」との記載がありました。
まとめるとsouped-upは「〈エンジンなどの〉性能を上げた」「より面白くした、魅力的にした」という意味になります。
さらにsoup upの形でも同様に「馬力、性能を上げる」「面白くする、刺激的にする」を意味するということがわかりました。（ko-chi @ Calgary）

今回取り上げる語は、onerous /əʊn(ə)rəs/ です。文脈から「めんどくさい」と推測しました。以下で意味等を確認していきます。
まず意味を Cambridge Dictionary でみると、“difficult to do or needing a lot of effort” とあり、LDOCE には “work or a responsibility that is onerous is difficult and worrying or makes you tired” と定義されていました。
次に語源を OED でみると、“Late Middle English: from Old French onereus, from Latin onerosus, from onus, oner- ‘burden".とあります。
以上のことから、onerous は「うんざりした、気乗りしない」という意味であることがわかりました。(OkaUchi)

秋セメスター修了まであと一ヶ月と少々、現在レポートに追われています。その中の１つにブックレポートがあります。本日紹介するのはその本を読んでいた時に見つけた単語です。
今回取り上げる単語は、suffocate /ˈsʌfəˌkeɪt/ です。”My worst nightmares had always been that squashy, smelly excrement surrounded and suffocated me.” という文の中で使われておりました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)を引いてみますと、自動詞では「窒息死する」、「息が詰まりそうになる；（新鮮な空気がなくて）息苦しく感じる」とあり、他動詞では「〜を窒息死させる」、「〈発展など〉を阻害する、妨げる」、「〜を息苦しくさせる」とありました。
これらの意義を見て連想される単語といえばchokeです。Suffocateとchokeの違いを見るために、New Oxford American Dictionary を引いてみます。
chokeは同辞書では、“(of a person or animal) have severe difficulty in breathing because of a constricted or obstructed throat or a lack of air”と定義されています。またsuffocateは、”die or cause to die from lack of air or inability to breath.”と定義されておりました。 (WREN@Nebraska)

取り上げるのはgastronomy /ɡæˈstrɒnəmi/ です。文脈から「美味しさ」であると推測しました。
『ジーニアス英和辞典』(第五版、大修館書店)では「美食、美食学、(特定地域の)料理法」とあります。また、LDOCEでは “the art and science of cooking and eating good food” と定義されています。Oxford Living DictionariesをみるとEarly 19th century: from French gastronomie, from Greek gastronomia, alteration of gastrologia (see gastro-, -logy).と由来が載っていました。
音楽と発酵の関係は実に面白いものです。調べた中では、鰹節とモーツァルトのかけ合わせがありました。心地よいクラシックは工場の中にいる人間はもちろん、微生物をも癒すのかもしれません。(seventh-dan)

気になったのは、addendum /ədéndəm/ です。addという単語が含まれていることから、オークションへの追加の出品を表しているのではないかと考えました。
『ウィズダム英和辞典』を引いたところ、「(書物などの)補遺、付録；追加[付加]物」とありました。ラテン語語源の単語なんだそうです。また、LDOCEでは“something you add to the end of a speech or book to change it or give more information”と定義されています。
ちなみに、身近なところだと「添付資料」はaddendum documentで表すことができます(英辞郎 on the WEB)。(Blue Sky)

仙台市は、外国人ドライバーが運転している車に貼るためのシールを作成しました。これには、周りのドライバーに注意喚起をする狙いがあるようです。

本日取り上げる表現は、“spearhead”/spɪ́rhɛ̀d/です。『ウィズダム英和辞典』でその意味を調べてみると、「〈攻撃・事業・運動など〉の先頭[陣頭]に立つ」と載っていました。また、LODCEには“to lead an attack or organized action”との定義があります。
よって今回の記事では、「とある産業団体の取り組みのひとつとして率先されている」というような意味になると分かります。この取り組みによって、少しでも多くの交通事故が減ることを願います。(Morihiro)

mama’s boy 復習
今回は「マザコン」の英語表現を紹介します。
日本語で「マザコン」とはmother complexの略ですが、英語ではこのような表現はしません。
調べてみるとmama’s boyと出てきます。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）には「マザコンの男」とありました。上記はアメリカの口語として使われ、イギリスではmummy’s boyと言われます。
LDOCEでは “a boy or man who lets his mother look after him and protect him too much, so that people think he is weak” と定義されていました。例文は “You’ve got stand up for yourself – stop being such a mama’s boy.” とありました。
また、mother complexは心理用語のため日常会話では使われないため、上記の表現をすることがほとんどです。しかしネガティブな言葉であるため、しょっちゅう会話に現れることはないようです。(amphibian)

languish /ˈlæŋɡwɪʃ/ を取り上げます。文脈から「自由を奪われる」だと推測しました。

feast or famine
メモの中に書き留めてあった表現を紹介します。feast or famineです。直訳すると「ごちそうか飢饉か」になり、なんとなくの雰囲気はつかめますが確信がなかったので調べてみました。以下辞書の定義です。
Oxford Dictionary of English（2th）: “either too much of something or too little”
Macmillan Dictionary: “a situation in which there is either far too much of something or not nearly enough of it”
『ジーニアス英和辞典』第5版（大修館）：「潤沢か欠乏かの両極端、一か八かの大勝負」
OEDには例文として “It’s been feast or famine at the company” “It’s feast or famine at golf clubs and we’re feasting at the moment”との記載がありました。
「一か八か」という意味ではsink or swimがぱっと頭に浮かびましたが、違いがよくわからなかったため、こちらも改めて調べてみると “fail or succeed entirely by one’s efforts”(OED)とのことです。(ko-chi @ Calgary)
