lacquer ware 復習
先日参加した、留学生との茶道教室で気になった単語を取り上げたいと思います。
お茶を淹れるときの作法はたくさんあり、１杯淹れるだけでも一苦労でした。粉末状の抹茶が入った容器の蓋の置き方にも気を付けなければいけないマナーがあります。この容器は、漆で塗られた漆器であり、模様が傷ついて剥がれるのを防ぐために、柄が描いてある方を上にして置かなければいけません。このとき、塗物、漆器を英語でどのように表現するのか気になったので調べてみました。英辞郎on the WEBで調べてみると、"lacquer ware"や"Japanese lacquerware"、"Japan"などがありました。"lacquer"/lˈækɚ/には「漆」という意味があり、"ware"には「…用の器物」などの意味があります。"Japan"に関しては、日本独特の工芸品であるからか、このような表現になります。『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版（大修館）で調べてみると、動詞でも「ラッカーを塗る」や「（髪）に整髪剤を塗る」などの意味があることが分かりました。LDOCEでは、"a liquid painted onto metal or wood to form a hard shiny surface"と定義されています。(Akim)
tongue-tied 復習
UG先生に教えていただいた“tongue-tied”という表現を取り上げたいと思います。“tongue”は「舌」、“tie”は「結ぶ」といった意味を持つ単語です。これらがハイフンで結ばれ“tongue-tied”となると、「(恥ずかしくて・緊張して)口ごもった；下のもつれた、舌足らずの」という意味になります(『ウィズダム英和辞典』)。確認のためにLDOCEも引いたところ、“unable to talk in a relaxed way because you feel nervous or embarrassed”と定義されていました。インターネットなどで例を検索してみたところ、“get tongue-tied”という使われ方が一番多かったように思います。
LDOCEでは、“When adults spoke to her, she became tongue-tied and shy.”が例として示されており、“become”を動詞として用いて表現することもできることが分かりました。「舌が回らない」という訳になる表現はインターネットでは他にも数多く出てきたので、興味のある方は是非検索してみてください。(Blue Sky)

play host toを取り上げます。文脈的に「K5地域は多くの政府機関、レストランや宿泊施設を〈運営する〉」と推測しました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』でhostを引くとbe [play] host to で「〈会議など〉主催する、…のホスト［主催者］役を務める」とありました。上記の場合はやはり「運営する」などといった訳が合うかと思います。他に例としてplay host to the Olympic Games「オリンピックの開催地となる」のように使用するのとができます。(Kiwi girl)
akin 復習

今回取り上げる語は、akin /əkín/ です。まず、意味を確認します。『リーダーズ英和辞典』(第3版、株式会社研究社)をみると、「血族で ; 似通って、類似して」とあります。また、同書に “Pity is akin to love” (憐れみは恋に通じる) という諺が載っていました。この意味を深く考えるのは大変難しそうです。
次に、語源を確認します。『ジーニアス英和大辞典』(大修館)をみると、「初16c ; a- (…に) +kin (親族) = …と親族である」とありました。また、kinの語源は「初12c以前 ; 古英語 cynn (種類、種族、親族). 原義は「産む」.」とありました。
以上のことから、今回のakin は「〜と同類で」といった意味で使われています。なお，授業で先生からkingもこのことばとつながっていることを教わりました。

pique / piːk/ という単語が気になったため、調べてみました。『ジーニアス英和辞典』（第五版，大修館）を引いたところ、名詞で「（誇り・虚栄心などを傷つけられての）立腹，憤り」、動詞で「（人）を怒らせる，自尊心を傷つける」、「（好奇心・興味など）をそそる，刺激する」などと載っておりました。Oxford Dictionary of English (2th) によると、"a feeling irritation or resentment resulting from a slight , especially to one’s pride"と定義されております。この記事では、文脈的に「怒り」のような意味合いで用いられていると思われます。
ちなみに語源はフランス語のpiquerで、prick（「ちくちく刺す」）やirritateという意味を持ちます。 (Gomez)

取り上げる表現は “put one’s nose to the grindstone” です。 “nose” と “stone” という見慣れない共起に着目しました。 まず “grindstone” とは何か調べると, 「回転研磨盤」「丸砥石」とありました。上記の句動詞に用いられることで二つの意味が成り立ち, 一つは「こつこつ働く[勉強する, 練習する]」となります。 “put” の箇所は “have”, “keep”, または “hold” に置き換えが可能です(『リーダーズ英和中辞典』研究社)。
続いて Merriam-Webster.comには “to do hard, continuous work” と定義され, “You’ll do well at school if you just keep your nose to the grindstone.” という例が挙げられていました。そこで “grindstone” との関連性が気になり, 改めて “grind” の用法を確認したところ, 「<口>こつこつ働く」「疲れきらせる」などを表す多義語であることがわかりました。ちなみにもう一方の意味合いは, 「人を間断なくこき使う」となります(同英和辞典)。(Cayu)

「黒潮大蛇行」を表す“the great meander of the Kuroshio current”を取りあげます。過去に何度も本ブログで記事にされているので復習となってしまいますが、“meander”と“current”をそれぞれ見ていきます。
まず、“meander”をMerriam-Websterを見てみると“a winding path or course”とあり、「蛇行」となることがわかりました。そこに「世界恐慌」“The Great Depression”を表す時に使われる“great”がつき、「大蛇行」となっています。次に“current”を調べると“the part of a fluid body (such as air or water) moving continuously in a certain direction”と定義され、ここでは「潮流」として使われています。
原因はわかっていませんが、この大蛇行は9月末に観測され、そこから約1か月は続くと予想されていました。(flying bird)

横綱・稀勢の里が世界遺産である京都の上賀茂神社を訪れ、土俵入りを奉納しました。
A sumo grand champion, or Yokozuna, has performed a ring-entering ceremony at a UNESCO World Heritage site in Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto.
The event was held at Kamigamo Shrine on Sunday.
Yokozuna Kisenosato performed the ritual in the unryu-style. Spectators cheered as he stamped the ground.
A junior high school student said Kisenosato's performance was very powerful.
A woman in her 60s said she was thrilled to see the Yokozuna and that she was surprised at how big he is.

取り上げるフレーズは “ring-entering ritual” です。文脈から、この記事は相撲に関連した話題であるといえます。相撲における “ring” は何かというと、両力士が闘いをする場所つまり「土俵」を指していることがわかります。したがって直訳すると「土俵に入る儀式」となり、意訳すると「土俵入り」となります。
さらに調べると、これは「横綱の土俵入り」を表していることがわかりました。「横綱の土俵入り」とは大相撲における最高位である横綱が本場所の幕内取組前や巡業先などで行うことです。厳密にいうと今回は、10月20日から始まる京都での地方巡業の成功を祈り神社に横綱が赴く「奉納土俵入り」を指すそうです。
稀勢の里関は前場所を休業していたため元気な姿を京都の人々に見せることができて満足していたことでしょう。果たして今場所は誰が優勝するのでしょうか。 (Hapidra)
